October’s Quiet Gift: Preparing Your Secure Base for the Holidays
October has always been a month of thresholds. The air sharpens, the light shifts, and nature whispers its invitation: slow down, let go, and prepare for what’s ahead.
Too often, we rush past this window. We jump from summer busyness into the whirlwind of the holiday season, forgetting that nature itself pauses here. Trees shed their leaves. Fields rest. Even the animals conserve their energy for winter.
What if we allowed ourselves the same?
Why “Just Breathe” Isn’t Always Enough
We’ve all heard the advice: just take a deep breath when you’re stressed. And yes, the breath can be a powerful tool. But here’s what many people don’t realize: if your body doesn’t feel safe, your nervous system won’t let you exhale.
That’s not failure. That’s biology. Your body is protecting you.
Before the breath can open, before your shoulders can drop, before rest can sink in, you need something deeper: a secure base.
The Psychology of a Secure Base
In attachment theory, a secure base is what allows children to explore and return, to grow and to rest. Adults are no different. We need spaces, both within ourselves and around us, that signal: you are safe here.
This is the foundation of nervous system regulation. It’s the soil that allows practices like breathwork, meditation, or even holiday joy to take root. Without it, tools skim the surface but never fully land.
So, how do we begin building this base?
Simple October Practices to Prepare
October is the perfect month to root into practices that create safety. Not dramatic changes, not striving for perfection; but quiet, steady signals to the body that it can trust and release.
Here are three places to start:
Grounding. Place your feet on the earth. Notice the support beneath you. Let the ground hold you.
Boundaries. As holiday demands begin to stir, remind yourself: I am allowed to take up space.
Breath with kindness. Instead of forcing deep, long breaths, ask: What would help me feel safer right now? Then let the breath follow.
These practices may seem simple, but their consistency teaches the nervous system: you are safe enough to soften. And once safety is present, your body does the rest.
Bringing This Into Coaching & Retreats
This philosophy of preparing the environment before expecting change is at the heart of my work. It’s Montessori for adults, it’s ecotherapy, it’s soul rest. Whether in one-on-one coaching or in retreat spaces, I create prepared environments where safety comes first.
Because once safety is present, your nervous system can truly receive. That’s when breathwork flows, sound healing resonates, and guided imagery reaches the deeper layers of who you are.

October is not just a season of endings, it’s a season of preparation. Nature is rooting down. You can, too.
By tending to your secure base now, you create the conditions for joy, steadiness, and genuine rest in the months ahead.
May you carry October’s quiet wisdom with you into the holidays—and beyond.
With warmth,
Karin
